About David Austin® Brother Cadfael®

About David Austin® Brother Cadfael® Potted Rose Bush

Rosa ‘AUSglobe’ — David Austin® Brother Cadfael®
🧬 Breeder: David C. H. Austin
🌹 A breathtaking English Shrub rose with enormous, deeply cupped blooms and one of the most powerful fragrances in the garden.

Brother Cadfael® is an unforgettable English rose, celebrated for its extraordinarily large, soft pink blooms that open into deeply cupped, peony-like rosettes. Each flower is filled with layers upon layers of delicate petals, creating a lush, romantic presence that feels almost antique. What truly sets this rose apart is its exceptional fragrance—rich, old-rose perfume with hints of fruit that fills the air and lingers beautifully in the garden.

💐 Plant & Flower Traits

🌹 Rose Type: English Shrub Rose
🎨 Color: Soft, warm pink with gentle tonal variation
🌸 Bloom Form: Very large, deeply cupped rosettes
🌼 Petal Count: Approximately 100+ petals
🌼 Fragrance: Strong, rich old-rose fragrance with fruity notes
🔁 Flowering Habit: Repeat flowering from late spring through fall
🌿 Foliage: Large, mid-green leaves with a soft, classic texture

🏡 Growth & Garden Habits

🌱 Growth Habit: Vigorous, upright shrub with arching canes
↕️ Height: Approximately 4–5 ft
↔️ Width: Approximately 3–4 ft
☀️ Light Requirements: Full sun for best flowering and fragrance
🛡️ Garden Use: Back of borders, statement plantings, cutting gardens, and romantic landscapes

💛 Why Grace Rose Farm Loves It

Brother Cadfael® is one of those roses that stops you in your tracks. The blooms are truly massive—the kind you instinctively cup in your hands—and the fragrance is unforgettable. It brings that lush, storybook garden feeling, like stepping into an old English abbey garden in full bloom. If you’re looking for a rose that delivers both visual drama and deep, classic fragrance, this is one of the finest choices you can plant.

🌿 Growing & Care Recommendations

Planting Site: Full sun with rich, well-drained soil
Spacing: Give room for its vigorous, arching growth habit
Watering: Regular watering, especially during establishment and peak bloom
Pruning: Light shaping in early spring; remove spent blooms to encourage repeat flowering
Maintenance: Moderate — thrives with attentive care and rewards with spectacular blooms

Before planting

Keep your rose in its pot in a sunny spot and water it well while you prepare the bed. Choose a place with at least six hours of sun and soil that drains well. Water the pot thoroughly an hour before planting.

Planting your potted rose

Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and about as deep. Ease the rose out, loosen any circling roots and set it so the top of the root ball sits level with the ground. Backfill with garden soil mixed with compost, firm gently and water deeply.

First season watering and care

Water deeply two to three times a week through the first season, more often in hot weather, letting the top inch of soil dry between waterings. Mulch keeps the roots cool. Start feeding once new growth appears, and remove spent blooms to keep the flowers coming.

I recently bought their 1 gallon and I was so happy to receive a well sized rose with seven stems! They did a really good job growing these as the stems were pretty thick.
