Product Description

Sweet Starlight™ Hydrangea Tree (Hydrangea paniculata 'Pan1782hydr') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its upright compact habit and luminous full panicle clusters of creamy-white blooms that flush soft pink as the season progresses, this panicle hydrangea brings softness and charm while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.

Unlike many hydrangeas, Sweet Starlight™ blooms reliably every year on first-year wood — no matter the climate or winter severity. Its 6–8″ panicles are excellent for fresh arrangements, and its dependable summer-to-fall bloom season keeps the garden beautiful long after the first rose flush has faded.

Maintenance Needs

  • Watering: Water regularly until established; moderate water needs thereafter.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins — blooms on new wood so pruning does not reduce flowering.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Winter Care: Exceptionally cold hardy to Zone 3; no special winter protection needed.
  • Pest & Disease: Generally low maintenance with no serious pest or disease issues.

Landscape Uses

Sweet Starlight™ Hydrangea Tree is a versatile, compact specimen that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.

How to Use Sweet Starlight™ with Roses

Sweet Starlight™ pairs beautifully with roses by adding contrast, softness, and extended seasonal interest. Its creamy-white panicles complement roses of any color, while its reliable new-wood blooming means it never misses a season — even after harsh winters that may stress other companions. Its upright compact form keeps it well-behaved beside rose beds without competing for light or space.

Grace Rose Farm Tip: Plant companions near roses with enough space for airflow and maintenance access. Avoid crowding the crown of the rose, and choose companions that enjoy similar sun, soil, and watering conditions. Sweet Starlight™’s creamy-white blooms complement virtually every rose color palette.
  • Use beside or behind roses for a soft, luminous summer-to-fall display.
  • Plant near roses of any color — creamy white complements every palette.
  • Cut panicles for fresh arrangements alongside rose blooms.
  • Choose for northern gardens where cold hardiness to Zone 3 is needed.
  • Allow 3–4 feet of spacing so the compact habit does not crowd adjacent roses.
Before planting

Keep your rose in its pot in a sunny spot and water it well while you prepare the bed. Choose a place with at least six hours of sun and soil that drains well. Water the pot thoroughly an hour before planting.

Planting your potted rose

Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and about as deep. Ease the rose out, loosen any circling roots and set it so the top of the root ball sits level with the ground. Backfill with garden soil mixed with compost, firm gently and water deeply.

First season watering and care

Water deeply two to three times a week through the first season, more often in hot weather, letting the top inch of soil dry between waterings. Mulch keeps the roots cool. Start feeding once new growth appears, and remove spent blooms to keep the flowers coming.

I recently bought their 1 gallon and I was so happy to receive a well sized rose with seven stems! They did a really good job growing these as the stems were pretty thick.
